Background of the Study

Polio remains a major public health challenge in some parts of Nigeria, including Borno State. Despite significant progress in polio eradication efforts, the state continues to experience challenges in achieving full vaccination coverage, particularly in hard-to-reach areas. Polio vaccination programs in Borno face barriers such as insecurity, poor infrastructure, cultural beliefs, and resistance to vaccination. Borno State has been affected by insurgency and conflict, which has displaced many people and disrupted healthcare services, including immunization campaigns (Ajayi et al., 2024). This study will examine the barriers to polio vaccination in Borno State, aiming to identify the factors hindering vaccination uptake and suggest solutions for overcoming these challenges.

Statement of the Problem

Polio vaccination rates in Borno State remain suboptimal due to a combination of social, political, and environmental factors. These barriers include insecurity, misinformation about vaccines, cultural resistance, logistical challenges, and access difficulties due to displacement. This study seeks to explore these barriers in detail and understand how they contribute to low vaccination coverage in the state.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the barriers to polio vaccination in Borno State.
  2. To assess the impact of insecurity and displacement on polio vaccination rates in Borno State.
  3. To recommend strategies to overcome barriers and improve polio vaccination coverage in Borno State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the primary barriers to polio vaccination in Borno State?
  2. How does insecurity and displacement affect polio vaccination campaigns in Borno State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to overcome barriers to polio vaccination in Borno State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Insecurity and displacement are significant barriers to achieving high polio vaccination rates in Borno State.
  2. Cultural beliefs and vaccine misinformation contribute to resistance to polio vaccination in Borno State.
  3. Targeted vaccination campaigns and community engagement will improve polio vaccination coverage in Borno State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the barriers to polio vaccination in Borno State, particularly in conflict-affected areas and displaced persons camps. Limitations may include difficulty accessing certain areas due to security concerns and the potential for underreporting of vaccination rates in some communities.
